How to get your deposit back in full?

I am moving out next week and I am terrified the landlord will keep my deposit for minor wear and tear. The flat is in the same condition as when I moved in (minus normal use), but I've heard horror stories.

What steps should I take to ensure I get my full deposit back? Any tips from people who've been through this?

For context:

- Been here 2 years

- Deposit is £1,800

- It's in a deposit protection scheme

- I've got my check-in inventory from when I moved in

Great that you have your check-in inventory! Here's what I'd recommend: 1. **Take dated photos of EVERYTHING** - every room, every corner, inside cupboards, appliances 2. **Clean professionally** - keep the receipt as proof 3. **Fix minor damage yourself** - fill nail holes, touch up paint 4. **Do a pre-checkout inspection** - request this from your landlord 5. **Document meter readings** with photos If they try to make deductions, you can dispute through the deposit scheme. They're usually fair if you have evidence.

Remember: landlords CANNOT charge for fair wear and tear. This includes: - Carpet wearing down from normal walking - Small scuffs on walls - Fading of paint/curtains from sunlight - Worn areas near door handles Only damage beyond normal use is chargeable. Know your rights!

I just went through this last month! The key thing that saved me was having comparison photos. I took photos on move-in day and then matching ones on move-out day. Same angles, same lighting. My landlord tried to charge me £200 for "carpet wear" but the deposit scheme ruled in my favour because I could prove it looked the same.
